Puccinia ferox is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is a endoparasite the Korbblütlergattung Verbesina . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in South and Central America .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia ferox can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds emerging on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia ferox grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The spermogonia and aecia of the species are unknown. The same applies to their uredia , they may not be trained. The parts of the species growing on both sides of the surfaces of the host leaves are dark cinnamon brown, confluent, powdery and uncovered. The light cinnamon to golden brown teliospores are two-celled, usually ellipsoidal, warty and mostly 33–46 × 22–28 µm in size. Their stem is brownish.

distribution

The well-known distribution area of Puccinia ferox extends from Mexico to Costa Rica to Colombia and Venezuela .

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia ferox are various sham asters ( Verbesina spp.). The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle of which only the telia and their host are known. It cannot therefore be said whether she will change host .
