Edward Willet Dorland Holway
Edward Willet Dorland Holway (* 1853 in Adrian ( Lenawee County , Michigan), † March 30, 1923 in Phoenix (Arizona) ) was an American banker, botanist and mycologist . He was the son of George Newell Holway and Amy Marie Ellison and had two brothers, William Newell Holway and Ruliff Stephen Holway . His botanical-mycological author's abbreviation is “ Holw. ".
Holway grew up on a farm in northeastern Iowa. He began studying civil engineering, but had to drop it off due to a serious illness. After his recovery, he began his professional career as a bank clerk at the Winneshiek County State Bank in Decorah, Iowa , where he was first treasurer and later vice president. Early on, he became interested in hard-to-reach and distant places where he could find rare and unusual plants, which he collected and classified. However, his specialty, in which he was also respected, were mushrooms. While working at the bank, he made trips within the USA and to Mexico. In his pension he devoted himself exclusively to botany and his travels, during which he first visited Central America and Canada. He moved to Minneapolis and took a position as a lecturer in botany at the University of Minnesota , which he held until his death. He also made his botanical collection available to the university. During his activity there, two long trips took him to South America; the first along the western part of the continent from Chile to Ecuador, the second and last finally to the east and south of Brazil. His garden in Minneapolis was famous for the rare species of plants that grew there and for the beautiful tulip garden. He received scientific recognition primarily for his work on Mexican rust mushrooms . He was also an avid mountaineer and has participated in a number of challenging climbing expeditions in the Canadian Rockies and the Caribou and Selkirk Mountains . He was a member of the Alpine Club of Canada , American Alpine Club , Botanical Society of America , Royal Geographical Society, and Society of Sigma Xi .
On May 20, 1877, he married Effie Aiken, his first wife, who died on November 29, 1917. After her death, he married Mary Mortensen. He had two daughters. Holway died during a convalescent stay in Phoenix, Arizona , of heart failure after suffering from influenza that had previously caused him to be hospitalized in Minneapolis for some time.
