Puccinia purpurea is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of horned wood sorrel ( Oxalis corniculata ) and of sweet grasses of the Andropogoneae tribe . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is spread all over the world.

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia purpurea can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds emerging on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia purpurea grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Aecia or spermogonia of the species are not known. The hazelnut brown uredia of the fungus usually grow on the underside of the leaf surfaces of the host plant. Their cinnamon - brown uredospores are ellipsoidal to almost spherical, 30–40 × 23–29 µm in size and finely spiky. The telia are black-brown, uncovered and compact. The hazel-brown teliospores are two-celled, usually ellipsoidal or long-ellipsoidal and 40–50 × 24–30 µm in size; their stalk is hyaline or yellowish and up to 95 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia purpurea includes warm regions around the world.

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia purpurea are horned wood sorrel ( Oxalis corniculata ) for the haplonts and sweet grasses of the Andropogoneae tribe ( sorghum and lemongrass ) for the dikaryote . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a development cycle of which only Telien and Uredien are known so far; Spermogonia and aecia could not be assigned to the fungus.
