Puccinia schistocarphae is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the sunflower genus Schistocarpha . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. She is known from Guatemala and Colombia .
features
Macroscopic features
Puccinia schistocarphae can only be recognized with the naked eye from the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Puccinia schistocarphae grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are unknown, the same applies to the uredia of the fungus and their uredospores. The leaves of the species growing on the underside of the host leaves are light yellow-brown, compact and uncovered, they are in dense groups. The almost hyaline teliospores are two-celled, usually long ovoid to long ellipsoid and 40–52 × 17–20 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 25 µm long.
distribution
The known distribution area of Puccinia schistocarphae includes Guatemala . The species is also known from Colombia .
ecology
The host plants of Puccinia schistocarphae are different Schistocarpha species. The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle, of which only Telien and their host are known; Uredien, Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.
