Cesare Pugni (* 31 May 1802 in Genoa , † January 14 . Jul / 26. January  1870 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was an Italian composer , mainly of ballet music .

Live and act

Cesare Pugni studied at the Milan Conservatory, composition with Bonifazio Asioli and violin with Alessandro Rolla . He wrote his first ballet in 1823 for La Scala in Milan . From 1832 to 1834 he was maestro al harpsichord at La Scala. In 1834 he moved to France, where he met the choreographer Jules Perrot . From then on both worked together, first for the Paris Opera , later at Her Majesty's Theater in London and from 1851 at the Bolshoi Theater in Saint Petersburg. In 1851 Pugni became the official ballet composer of the Mariinsky Theater and teacher of counterpoint at the Petersburg Conservatory.

In the course of his life, Pugni wrote more than 300 ballets for the most well-known choreographers of his time, including Jules Perrot, Paul Taglioni , Arthur Saint-Léon and Marius Petipa , based on the ballet composer Wenzel Robert von Gallenberg . in addition, he composed orchestral works (including two symphonies), masses and songs.
