Pinnacle Hill on Puketutu Island |
Puketutu Island is an island of volcanic origin in Manukau Harbor on the North Island of New Zealand . The island is now connected to the mainland via land reclamation and a road.
geography
Puketutu Island is located in the eastern part of Manukau Harbor about 4 km west of the center of the Mangere district , the former independent city of Manukau City . The island is 2.55 km long and 1.6 km at its widest point. The 1.66 km long Island Road connects Puketutu Island with the mainland. On both sides of the road, fertile farmland was gained through land reclamation measures, so that the island is actually a peninsula today and should be called Puketutu Peninsula .
geology
The island, part of the Auckland Volcanic Field , was probably formed around 77,000 years ago (± 9,000 years) through volcanic activity and consists entirely of basalt . More recently dated basalts suggest that volcanic activity continued to form the island until around 16,000 years ago (± 11,000 years ago).
history
There used to be several Pā ( Māori villages and fortifications ) on the island , but these were abandoned when the European colonists arrived in the area.
use
In the 1950s, a quarry was built on the island and the basalt rock extracted there was used, among other things, for the expansion of Auckland Airport .
Renaturation
In April 2007 , the plan between the Kelliher Charitable Trust , which owned the island, and Watercare Services , which operates a sewage treatment plant on land in Mangere , decided to fill the quarry with post-treated sewage sludge from the sewage treatment plant, thereby renaturating the landscape initiate the island. The project aims, on the island after the completion of measures to reclassify parts into a public park and it was a 26. Regional Park of Auckland expel. The operator of the sewage treatment plant pledged to pay the trust NZ $ 25 million for use in sewage sludge disposal.
In 2011 the Trust transferred ownership of the island to the Auckland Council , with assurances that the island would be opened to the public as a park. The measures for this were not yet completed as of 2018.
