Pullman Hotels and Resorts is an international luxury hotel chain . Its history goes back to the parent company founded in New York City in 1877 . This formed the cornerstone for the hotel business of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits , later called Pullman International Hotels. The company has been part of Accor since 1991 . Today Pullman is one of a total of 18 brands in the French group. The hotel chain is aimed primarily, but not exclusively, at business travelers.

history

In 1867 George Pullman founded the Pullman Company based in Chicago . The company developed sleeping cars that were equipped with many amenities. This made it possible to reach remote destinations easily for the first time. The first Pullman hotel opened in New York City in 1877 to offer guests luxurious accommodation before or after a train journey. During the following years, more houses were added, and by the turn of the millennium the company had a total of 16 locations worldwide. The hotel business was already bundled in 1894 in the Compagnie Internationale des Grands Hotels (CIGH), a subsidiary of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL). In the 20th century, the CIWL finally introduced the Pullman sleeping car into Europe. There the brand achieved greater awareness in the decades that followed.

Pullman International Hotels (PIH), the successor to CIGH, remained a subsidiary of CIWL until the 1980s. In addition to Pullman, the company also owned other hotel chains, such as Arcade in German-speaking countries. After the fall of the Iron Curtain , Pullman expanded its business to Eastern Europe. In the early 1990s, PIH opened an average of one new house every week. The company was ranked 15th among the largest hotel companies in the world. At the same time it became known that they were looking for a partner for further expansion. Against this background, Accor acquired a majority stake in the CIWL hotel business in 1991. Despite the successful integration, Accor temporarily gave up the Pullman brand three years later. Many of the houses continued under the Sofitel umbrella .

In 2007, the group announced that it would reactivate the brand. Pullman was positioned as a 5-star hotel chain for business travelers . When designing the houses, great importance was attached to the technical equipment and the gastronomic offer. In the same year the company opened twelve hotels: seven in France, two in Germany and one each in Belgium, China and Thailand. Sometimes it was existing houses under other Accor brands that were renamed. In the following years Pullman developed into an international hotel chain that gradually expanded its target group to include leisure travelers.

Locations

In the 2016 financial year, Pullman had 119 hotels in 32 countries with a total of 35,217 rooms. The majority of the houses (69 pieces) were in the Asia-Pacific region . In Europe , Pullman had 27 hotels, 13 of which were in France . 16 hotels were located in the Mediterranean region , the Near and Middle East and on the African continent . Pullman had seven locations on the American continent . In 2016, 55% of guests were business travelers and 45% were leisure travelers.

The Pullman hotels are usually located in the city center, but always with good transport links. Many houses have a restaurant with local and international cuisine. A hotel bar is always available, an extensive wine and champagne menu is typical . All hotels have luxurious facilities in a modern design. There are wellness and sauna areas, and sometimes there is also a swimming pool. Modern art is often on display in the lobby .

Others

In 2008 Pullman took over the Quellenhof in Aachen . The hotel is the chain's oldest location in Germany.

Since 2013, Pullman has been holding the so-called “Pullman Artnight” when new houses open.
