The Hainleite pumped storage power plant (other name: PSW Straussberg) was planned in Thuringia by PSW Hainleite GmbH, a subsidiary of the Hochtief construction company . It should have an output of up to 500 MW and stand on the Hainleite near Sondershausen in the Kyffhäuserkreis . The two necessary basins were planned between Straussberg and Immenrode near Sondershausen and in the Wippertal between Groß- and Kleinfurra . The locations have not yet been finalized. The project was ended in the planning phase in 2015 for economic reasons.
Project data
The two interconnected basins at a distance of 3 km should each be 30 to 45 ha in size, have a basin volume of 2.5 to 5 million m³ and a height difference of 240 m. This should enable a full load operation of 6 hours. The stored energy content should be up to 3000 MWh . The shaft power plant was to be built underground in a cavern near the lower basin. The construction costs were estimated at up to 650 million euros. The start of construction was planned for 2017, commissioning for 2021 at the earliest.
The regional planning procedure began in 2014, and the procedure was accompanied by public information evenings.
