history

Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age pottery was found on the Feuerkuppe mountain , which belongs to the Straussberg district , and is evidence of prehistoric settlement.

The place on the Hainleite was first mentioned in 1267 as Straussberg Castle as the seat of the Landgrave's Truchsessen of Thuringia, Berthold von Schlotheim . Straussberg Castle is now northwest of the town. Until 1918 the place belonged with Immenrode as an exclave to the subordinate rule of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

Furthermore, there is the " KiEZ Holiday Feuerkuppe" - a bungalow village with bowling alley , swimming pool and climbing tower - a monkey park with free-living and tangible Barbary apes and a summer toboggan run . This facility was founded in 1951 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn as the central pioneer camp " Gheorghiu Dej " for school holidays, but it was also used as a holiday home and training center for employees.

On January 1, 1996 , the village became part of the large community of Schernberg , which in turn was incorporated into the town of Sondershausen on December 1, 2007.
