Pioneer camp

The pioneer camps of the GDR were called the central pioneer camps ( ZPL for short ) . It was a children's holiday camp. Last time there were 48 such institutions in the territory of the German Democratic Republic .

Content

The content of the holiday life of the Thälmann pioneers and the FDJ members (pupils in the 8th to 12th grade) was determined by resolutions of the Central Council of the FDJ. Participation in one of three 18-day summer vacation stays during the annual school summer vacation was generally an award for good school and social work for the pioneers and FDJ students.

organization

Each central pioneer camp had an assigned carrier company (large company) for all economic issues , which secured and expanded the material basis of the camps in its own contribution and with state-planned services and materials, as well as ensuring the materials and supplies for up to 1200 participants per round.

Personnel equipment

The head of the ZPL was a year-round appointed functionary of the territorial FDJ district management, his deputy (economic manager) a year-round employee of the sponsoring company. The camp doctor and nurses were made available, and the kitchen and technical seasonal workers were employed or assigned by the porter company. The carers for the children were teachers and the majority were students from universities of teacher education.

Demarcation

In contrast to the pioneer camps, participation in the two to three-week (company) holiday camps , which were maintained in far greater numbers by companies, combines , institutions, authorities, etc., was not linked to requirements such as excellent school performance or social activities. Almost every schoolchild up to the age of about 14, whose parents wished it, had the opportunity to participate in such an organized holiday during the eight-week summer vacation for a small, more symbolic contribution to expenses.
