history

Emmaus Chapel in Raila

Raila was first mentioned in a document on August 14, 1325.

In 1951 the foundation stone for the Raila Emmaus chapel was laid. The construction began as a morgue with a prayer hall because the government did not want to build new churches in the GDR . With the completion of the shell in 1954, the now recognizable church building was temporarily stopped by the authorities. The Emmaus Chapel was finally consecrated on May 18, 1959.

During the GDR era, VEB Carl Zeiss Jena maintained the Hermann Matern pioneer camp in the Wetteratal . The property had not been used since 1990. In the years 2002 to 2004 the buildings were demolished and the area renatured as part of a compensatory measure for the expansion of the A 9.
