The Wettera is a right tributary of the Saale in the Saale-Orla district in the south-east of Thuringia .
It rises on the northern edge of the Rosenbühl south of Tanna and then flows in a northerly direction through the Leitenteiche, the town of Tanna, Frankendorf and the Frankendorf reservoir , before its direction of flow changes to the west and in a narrow valley it crosses the federal motorway 9 and reaches Raila . Below Raila, the narrow valley floor reaches the Bleilochtalsperre near Gräfenwarth , where the Wettera has been flowing since the reservoir was built in 1932. Before that, its confluence with the Saale was about two kilometers to the west.
The Wettera valley does not play a special role as a traffic route and is mostly only accessible via dirt roads.
Along the Wettera the 93.9 extends ha large nature reserve Wettera , which was provided in 2003 under protection.
