Immenrode is a district of the district town of Sondershausen in the Kyffhäuserkreis ( Thuringia ).

location

The place is located on the southern roof of the Hainleite immediately south of its highest elevation, the Wettenburg . The Rittelsgraben , a left branch of the Helbe, runs through the village .

In the north of the village is Straußberg , east of Sondershausen , south Himmelberg and west Großberndten .

history

The name could be derived from the name of the clearing master Immo or the word Immen for bees could have been the inspiration. The first written mention comes from the year 1127.

From the 16th century onwards, citizens of the Jewish faith settled there, as evidenced by a small synagogue , a school and the Immenrode Jewish cemetery . The Church of St. Trinitatis was built on the site of a previous building from 1778 that was destroyed in a fire in 1872. Until 1918, the place with Straussberg as an exclave belonged to the rule of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

During the November pogrom in 1938 , villagers desecrated the Jewish cemetery. During the Second World War , prisoners of war from Serbia as well as women and men from Poland and Ukraine had to do forced labor in agriculture.

The originally independent village became part of the large community Schernberg on January 1, 1996 , which in turn was incorporated into the town of Sondershausen on December 1, 2007.
