The Río Grande pumped storage power plant is a pumped storage power plant in the province of Cordoba , Argentina . It consists of the Cerro Pelado dam , whose reservoir forms the upper basin, and the Arroyo Corto dam , whose reservoir serves as the lower basin. The two dams and the associated pumped storage power plant are also known as the Cerro Pelado hydropower plant complex ( Complejo hidroeléctrico Cerro Pelado in Spanish ).

Both dams are on the Río Grande . In addition to generating electricity, they also serve to supply drinking water and irrigation. Initial studies for the project began in 1970.

Cerro Pelado dam

The Cerro Pelado dam ( Spanish: Represa Cerro Pelado or Dique Cerro Pelado ) forms the upper basin of the pumped storage power plant. Construction began in 1974. It went into operation in February 1986. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are state-owned ( Secretaría de Energía de la Nación ). The license for the operation was transferred to the Empresa Provincial de Energía de Córdoba (EPEC) on March 31, 1996.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a bulk dam with a height of 104 m above the river bed (maximum height 105 m). The top of the dam is at an altitude of 880 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 410 (or 420) m. Its width is 12 m at the crown and a maximum of 531.5 m at the base. The volume of the barrier structure is 3.676 million m³.

Another secondary dam is located around 400 m south of the main dam. It has a height of 50 (or 57 or 60) m, a length of 1475 (or 1500) m and a volume of 1.6 million m³. The width of the dam is 10 m at the crown and a maximum of 326 m at the base.

The weir system with the five weir fields is located between the main and the secondary dam. A maximum of 3285 m³ / s can be discharged via the weir system. An additional 600 m³ / s can be discharged via a further flood relief.

Reservoir

The normal storage destination is between 856.2 m and 876 m. With a reservoir target of 876 m, the reservoir extends over an area of ​​around 12.41 km² and holds 371 million m³ of water. The maximum storage target is 877.79 m, the minimum 823 m.

Arroyo Corto dam

The Arroyo Corto dam ( Spanish Represa Arroyo Corto or Dique Arroyo Corto ) forms the lower basin of the pumped storage power plant. Construction began in 1982. It went into operation in 1986. The dam is state owned ( Secretaría de Energía de la Nación ). The license to operate the facility was transferred to EPEC on April 25, 2001.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a bulk dam with a height of 43.5 m above the river bed (maximum height 44 m). The top of the dam is at a height of 701 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 1528 (or 1600 or 1616) m. Its width is 12 m at the crown and a maximum of 205 m at the base. The volume of the barrier structure is 2.366 million m³.

The weir system with the four weir fields is on the left side of the dam. A maximum of 3170 (or 3245) m³ / s can be discharged via the weir system.

Reservoir

The normal destination is between 680 m and 691 m. With a reservoir target of 691 m, the reservoir extends over an area of ​​around 3.57 (or 3.94) km² and holds 30.8 (or 34.47 or 35) million m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 698.5 m, the minimum 672 m.

power plant

The power plant serves to cover peak loads . Its construction began in 1978. It went into operation in 1986. The installed capacity is 750  MW . The average annual generation is given as 970 (or 977, 980 or 997) million  kWh . It is located in an underground cavern (length 105 m, width 25 (or 27) m, height 50 (or 52) m) at the Cerro Pelado dam. The cavern is 130 m below the river bed or 220 (or 226) m below the level of the weir system. Two penstocks with a length of 330 m each lead from the dam to the power plant. After the water has passed the turbines of the power plant, it is led through a tunnel with a length of 5800 m into the Arroyo Corto reservoir.

The four Francis turbines each have a maximum output of 187.5 MW and the associated generators each 210  MVA . The turbines were supplied by Allis-Chalmers , the generators by Siemens. The nominal speed of the turbines is 250 min −1 . The fall height is between 162.64 m and 185.1 m. The flow rate is a minimum of 86 and a maximum of 500 m³ / s. In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 16.5 kV to 500 kV using block transformers.

All turbines can be operated as pump turbines ; A maximum of 330 (or 350) m³ / s can be conveyed in pumping mode. An average of 1.18 billion kWh is required for pumping operations each year.

The cost of the project is given as $ 1 billion .
