history
Pungelscheid can look back on a long history. Archbishop Anno II of Cologne is said to have donated the lands of Pungelscheid to the newly founded Cologne monastery of St. Maria ad Gradus as early as 1059 . Pungelscheid Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1359 . The builder of Pungelscheid Castle was Rötger von Neuhoff .
Theodor von Neuhoff was King of Corsica for 100 days in 1736. He came from a branch line of the Neuhoffs on Pungelscheid. The male line of the family has died out since the middle of the 18th century. The von Rump gentlemen appeared as the new owners. In 1797 the castle burned down by lightning, with the exception of the remains of the round tower and the vaulted cellar.
Until shortly after the end of the Second World War, the place was dominated by agriculture. Only a few farms shaped the landscape. In the 1950s there was a building boom that resulted from the economic miracle, which caused the village to grow from initially around 100 inhabitants to over 3000 inhabitants today.

Attractions
After the fire, three buildings were erected on the site of the former outer bailey, which, together with the surrounding farms, characterize the townscape: a granary, an oat box and a blacksmith's and wagon forge. The oldest building is the oat box. The lower part dates from 1803, the upper part from 1860.
The forge, like the granary, dates from 1828.
It is a single-storey stone building. It was used as a blacksmith and cart forge for the owners' own needs and was also available to the surrounding farms. The forge was closed after 1950.
In the 1980s the oat bin, the granary and the forge were renovated; a new forge was built in and the fireplace was restored.
