history

The bank was founded on May 19, 1894 in Lahore (today's Pakistan ). The founding commission came from different parts of India, of different faiths and backgrounds, with the common goal of creating a national bank that would advance the country's economic interests. Among the founders was u. a. the independence fighter Lala Lajpat Rai . The bank is the oldest surviving bank in the country, founded with purely Indian capital. After Indian independence and the separation of the Indian subcontinent into the states of India and Pakistan, the headquarters were relocated to New Delhi. The bank is no longer active in Pakistan today as all the bank's assets were confiscated there during the Second Indo-Pakistani War in 1965. The bank was also expropriated in Burma ( Myanmar ) in 1963.

Well-known personalities such as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi , Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were once customers of the bank.

The Punjab National Bank announced in February 2018 that it had discovered fraudulent transactions of up to $ 1.8 billion in just one of its branches.
