The purple whistle thrush ( Myophonus caeruleus ) is a species of bird from the genus Myophonus in the flycatcher family (Muscicapidae). Occasionally it is assigned to the thrush family (Turdidae).
description
With a length of about 33 centimeters and a weight of about 179 grams, the purple whistle thrush is one of the largest representatives of the flycatcher. It has a black or yellow beak and blue-black plumage, the tips of which are shiny gray-blue.
Subspecies and distribution
The distribution area of the purple whistle thrush extends from Central Asia to the Indonesian islands in Southeast Asia. There it lives in mountain forests up to the tree line at an altitude of about 2400 to 3000 meters and mostly breeds near mountain streams. Your clutch consists of two eggs. Due to seasonal hikes, they can now also be found in tropical forests and mangroves .
There are six subspecies:
- M. c. caeruleus ( Scopoli , 1786) - Middle and Eastern China
- M. c. crassirostris Robinson , 1910 - southeastern Thailand , Cambodia and north of the Malay Peninsula
- M. c. dichrorhynchus Salvadori , 1879 - middle and south of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra
- M. c. eugenei Hume , 1873 - central, eastern and south-eastern Myanmar, west, north and east Thailand, central and southern Yunnan, and northern and central Indochina
- M. c. flavirostris ( Horsfield , 1821) - Java
- M. c. temminckii Vigors , 1832 - western Tian Shan southwards to Afghanistan and eastwards through the Himalayas , eastern Assam to Sichuan , also northern and northeastern Myanmar
