Purulia , also Puruliya , is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .
The city is the capital of the Purulia district of the same name . Purulia has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 22 wards .
Demographics
The population of the city is 121,067 according to the 2011 census. Purulia has a gender ratio of 942 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 82.1% in 2011. Almost 83% of the population were Hindus , approx. 14% were Muslims , approx. 2% were Christians and approx. 2% belonged to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age were 10.5% of the population. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.
