Pyrexia is an American death metal band . They play what is known as New York Death Metal .

history

The band was formed in Long Island in 1990 . At that time it consisted of the singer Darryl Wagner , the guitarists Guy Marchais and Rob Shimonski , the bassist Chris Basile and the drummer Mike Andrejko . Your name is the English technical term for fever , in German also pyrexia .

A few months after their founding, Pyrexia released their first demo album, which consisted of four pieces of hard, fast but grooving Death Metal. The band quickly found acceptance in the New York underground scene and their demo gradually became known beyond the borders of the USA. In 1993 they were able to sign a record deal with the Spanish label Drowned . They then released their first full album called Sermon Of The Mockery , which is now considered an underground classic by many. On the album, Tony Caravalla played the second guitar instead of Rob Shimonski, who had dropped out. Many appearances followed throughout North America.

In 1994 the somewhat older singer and driving force behind Pyrexia, Darryl Wagner, decided to turn his back on the metal scene and Tony Caravalla followed his example. Keith DeVito had to be hired to replace the singer , and Phil Selfridge joined as the new guitarist . In addition, Rob Maresca acted as a new drummer. With the new line-up, which was more geared towards aggression than complexity, Pyrexia recorded the EP Hatredangerandisgust for Pathos Productions in 1995 , on which the band distanced themselves a bit from classic death metal and incorporated hardcore elements .

When Pyrexia wanted to continue on the new track and record a full album in the style of Hatredangerandisgust , singer Keith DeVito got an offer from Suffocation to act as a replacement for Frank Mullen on their European tour with Deicide . He accepted and the band was forced to take a long break. When he returned, Guy Marchais had turned away disappointed and took a break, but stayed with the band as a songwriter. Today he plays for Suffocation. With Ryan Harrison on bass and Chris Basile on guitar, Pyrexia finally released the album System Of The Animal on the Danish label Serious Entertainment in 1997 .

After a tour with Obituary , Keith DeVito decided to form a new band called Catastrophic together with Trevor Peres and the remaining members of Pyrexia . They released an album called The Cleansing in 2001 , which was released on Metal Blade Records . But Chris Basile left the band and was determined to continue with Pyrexia. He was looking for new members and found what he was looking for in the former Malevolent Creation drummer Justin DiPinto , the singer Eric Shute , the guitarist Lee Cozens and the bassist Ed Drozdowski . Chris Basile founded the Rex Records label and released the best-of album Cruelty Beyond Submission in collaboration with Crash Music in 2004 . With the arrival of Insatanity bassist Chris Lytle , the band then went into the studio to record their third album Age Of The Wicked , which was kept in the original Pyrexia style, for Unique Leader Records .
