Q65 was a Dutch rhythm and blues band in the 1960s.

occupation

The group was founded in January 1965 by the Hague guitarists Joop Roelofs and Frank Nuyens and the singer Willem Bieler . The original formation also included Dick Schulte Nordholt , Peter Vink (both electric bassist) and the drummer Jay Baar , who was later replaced by Hans Waterman . In the following years the line-up changed several times; new band members were among others Eric van de Berk , Derk Groen and Rinus Hollenberg .

Recordings and achievements

Q65 quickly made a name for themselves in the Netherlands as a rough, tough group, whose appearance and style of play were most comparable to the early Pretty Things . At the end of 1965 she got a recording deal with Decca . Their first single, You're the Victor , made it to number 11 in the Dutch charts in February 1966 and was in the top 40 there for 13 weeks. This success led the then best-known Dutch singer, author and radio DJ Peter Koelewijn to produce the LP Revolution with Q65 in 1966 . The titles published on it showed the full spectrum of their music, from Otis Redding's soul ballad Mr. Pitiful to Willie Dixon's bluesy Down in the Bottom and Ella McDaniel's I'm a Man to Allen Toussaint's Get out of My Life, Woman ; They gave these songs their very own sound through their instrumentation with several guitars and basses. In their own compositions, namely Sour Wine , Summer Thoughts in a Field of Weed , I Got Nightmares and Just who's Inside , they also developed an individual facet that derives its charm from the contrast between almost melancholy vocals, Bieler's rough voice and hard R&B related. This LP sold 35,000 copies in its home country within a very short time - no small success considering the small size of the Dutch market and the competition from English and US beat records .

In order to make their second single, The Life I Live , also an original composition from this LP , known beyond the Netherlands, Q65 traveled to London that same year. There the band was not given a work permit to perform, so that they had to return after a few interviews without having achieved anything and instead gave an open-air concert in front of 30,000 fans in Scheveningen . This 45 record made it into the top 10 at home and remained the group's biggest selling hit, as a result of which it was found good enough to support the Small Faces , Spencer Davis Group , Kinks and ... Pretty Things concerts .

The later development

In the second half of the 1960s, the band disappeared from the "big stage" for various reasons: members were drafted into military service and could not be replaced equally, there were differences about drug use among individual musicians, and the group made an impact in the face of changes in popular music like a holdover from a bygone era. Attempts to adapt to newer musical trends - in 1970 and 1971 Q65 released the more psychedelic rock- trending LPs Afghanistan and We Are Gonna Make It  - failed, so the band soon broke up.

Several members of Q65 have now died (Jay Baar 1990, Wim Bieler 2000 and Dick Schulte Nordholt 2006). The longest and most successful bassist Peter Vink has remained in the music scene, who then played for Finch and also worked on Arjen Lucassen's project Ayreon .
