The quark stones

The quark stones are a granite formation near Niedercrinitz in the Zwickau district in Saxony . These are coarse-grained biotite granite rocks in wool sack weathering . They are a geological natural monument .

location

The quark stones are located northwest of the district road 9301 leading from Niedercrinitz to Wolfersgrün , in the triangle where the Voigtsbach flows into the Crinitzer Wasser . The mill ditch of the Leonhardtsmühle branches off from the Crinitzer water directly at the quark stones.

geology

The quark stones lie on the northwestern edge of the Kirchberg granite pluton and are an offshoot of the same. The original overlying metamorphic contact zone, which presumably consisted of gneiss , has been completely eroded in this area . After the overburden had been removed, the granite rock continued to weather, which, together with its use for stone quarrying , gave it its current appearance.

etymology

The name Quarksteine (from mhd. Querh ; cf. Querx ) refers to the dwarfs living here and means dwarf stones .

use

The quark stones were formerly used as a quarry for the extraction of granite . Today they are part of the conservation area "Kirchberger Granite". They are a popular hiking destination.

Dwarf saga

According to legend, dwarfs live in the caves under the quark stones. At night, when people were sleeping, they got ready for work and ran over to the Leonhardtmühle to grind flour. The miller's wife served them a soup every evening. Before dawn they went home to the quark stones. So it went night after night, year after year, until the millers grew old and died. The new miller's wife was stingy and did not want to allow the dwarfs their soup. To get rid of the dwarfs, she heavily salted the soup. The dwarves resented her and have not been seen since.
