Räuberhände is a novel by Finn-Ole Heinrich from 2007.

The novel is about the friends Janik and Samuel, who come from different social backgrounds. Janik and Samuel travel to Istanbul . Samuel's secret goal is to find his unknown father. First of all, they take long walks. They want to open a shop to finance their stay.

Janik feels insecure and uncomfortable during the stay. Then Samuel falls ill, has a high fever for two weeks, and Janik takes care of him. Because they cannot find work, money is running out. Janik makes contact with his mother and learns that Samuel's mother is undergoing alcohol withdrawal.

After Samuel's recovery, Janik tries again to reach his mother on the phone. He learns that Irene, Samuel's mother, died in a setback in alcohol withdrawal at her home. Samuel is very calm about this news. Janik travels back to Germany alone. It is uncertain whether Samuel will continue the search for his father.

Janik

Janik is a teacher's son. He doesn't have to worry about his financial situation and grows up in a stable environment. Janik successfully completed his Abitur. In the course of his development he questions his parents' way of life, which often leads to arguments.

He likes to spend his free time with his friend Samuel, whom he has known for years. In the course of the story he met Samuel's mother Irene.

Samuel

In contrast to Janik, Samuel is a tidy and self-confident boy who is neglected by his mother. Instead, Janik's parents, who often prefer him, take care of him. The real goal for Samuel on their trip to Istanbul is to find his father. Samuel is envied by Janik for his independence.

Janik's parents

His parents are teachers at a high school, they have no financial problems. Both have high standards, for which Janik criticizes them. Janik feels inferior to them. Despite all the problems, Janik knows that he needs his parents and that they only want the best for him. Janik's parents know Samuel's situation and support him financially. You see in Samuel the "perfect child" with a difficult childhood. Janik is jealous and rebels by various means to get his parents' attention.

Lina

Janik's friend Lina is a slim, pretty young woman of 18 years. Janik doesn't tell Lina about the planned trip to Istanbul. Instead, he ends the relationship for no reason.

Irene

Samuel's mother, Irene, is an alcoholic. She only got an apartment in which she lives alone with the help of Janik's parents. By thinking about her past, she recognizes the reasons for her actions and her current life situation. Irene is seen by Janik as very attractive and is his first sexual contact. When Samuel learns about it, it leads to constant arguments between the two.

Osman

Osman, Samuel's father, was Irene's great love. He also left Irene for professional reasons before Samuel was born. Apart from his name, and that he is probably Turkish, Samuel knows nothing about his father.

Bubu

Bubu is a homeless friend of Irenes who feeds on thefts in the supermarket. Janik is fascinated by his art of survival.

Interpretation of the novel

“Räuberhände”, Heinrich's first novel, is a coming-of-age story. H. a kind of development novel in which he u. a. Refers to his own youth in Cuxhaven. The novel is about growing up, distancing yourself from parents, breaking out of a milieu that is perceived as tight, the search for “real life”, and the personal development of the protagonists . In an article published in Die Zeit on June 13, 2008, Sebastian Reier describes the spelling of Finn-Ole Heinrich as "something that few young writers can attest to today. It has its own tone." In any case, their lightness is refreshing. Heinrich met the search for identity with "tremendous empathy."

2018 is the start of shooting a feature film of the same name . Ilker Çatak will take over the direction. The script was written by Gabriele Simon and Finn-Ole Heinrich.
