Réseau Express Régional ( RER for short, German for "Regional Express (bahn) netz") isthe common namein French-speaking countries for S-Bahn -like suburban rail transport systems. The first RER system was introduced in the Paris area (see Réseau express régional d'Île-de-France ). The first two lines ( A and B , 1977) areoperated jointlyby the local transport company RATP ( Metro ) and the state railway SNCF , the later lines C , D and E solely by SNCF.

RER systems outside Paris

There are other RER systems in other major French cities and in francophone Switzerland (e.g. the Léman Express ). For the Belgian capital Brussels operates Belgian state railway also a commuter train , which was referred to in the planning and RER, but now Train S 's.
