The Réserve écologique de la Serpentine-de-Coleraine is a protected area established in 2003 on an area of 396.55 hectares in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .
It is located in the regional county town of Les Appalaches in the area of the parish of Saint-Joseph-de-Coleraine, southwest of Thetford Mines, and protects two highly alkaline mountains, the 460 m high Mont Oak and the 494 m high Colline Kerr , which are rich in magnesium . Therefore, there are extraordinary and often rare plants. There is also a cave that has remains of previous mining activities. It is one of the four protected areas of its kind that are open to the public in Québec. It was set up in cooperation with the municipality of Saint-Joseph-de-Coleraine, the Corporation Sentiers pédestres des 3 Monts de Coleraine (which run an educational program), the Société pour la Conservation de la Nature-Québec and the Société Asbestos limitée .
In terms of tree species, the red oak ( Quercus rubra ) and sugar maple (Acer saccharum) are represented on the north and west flanks of Mount Oak, in the steeper areas these are the Pinus resinosa called Pin rouge and the Pin blanc called Weymouth- Pine .
Five plants in the reserve are considered threatened or endangered. These are aleuticum Adiantum and Adiantum viridimontanum from the kind of adiantum , Aspidotis densa of the family of pteridaceae , Asplenium platyneuron from the kind of Asplenium and Solidago simplex subsp. randii, (var.) monticola from the genus of the goldenrod . They grow on the steep scree slopes . Aspidotis densa is extremely rare. This striped fern, known as aspidote touffue in Québec , is only found in the province of Québec, in six locations. Of these, three are in the Coleraine region alone .
The turkey vulture , which is called Urubu à tête rouge here, is a frequent visitor to the reserve in summer . This makes the area one of its northernmost occurrences.
