The Río Chao is a 6 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in northwestern Peru in the La Libertad region . The headwaters of the Río Chao arise in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . Including the source river Río Chorobal, the total length of the river is 85 km. The approximately 1400 km² (according to other sources 1558 km²) large catchment area borders in the north on that of the Río Virú , in the south and east on that of the Río Santa .

Source rivers

The 79 km long river Río Chorobal (also Río Oyón in the upper reaches ) rises on the western flank of the 4345  m high Cerro Ururupa at an altitude of about 4100  m ( ). From there it initially flows 10 km south before turning south-west. At river kilometer 30 he leaves the mountains and reaches the coastal plain. At river kilometer 24, a tributary that forms an almost 7 kilometers wide alluvial fan meets the Río Chorobal from the north. This gradually turns towards the south-southwest and flows through the coastal plain. It is flanked by irrigated cultivation areas. At river kilometer 10 lies the small town of Chao on the left bank of the river .

The 74 km long river Río Huamanzaña (also Río Los Chilenos in the upper reaches ) rises north of the sanctuary of Santuario Nacional de Calipuy at an altitude of about 4250  m ( ). The Río Huamanzaña flows through the reserve in a southerly direction. Then the river turns to the southwest, later to the west-southwest and west. It reaches the coastal plain and there runs parallel to the Río Chorobal.

River course

The Río Chao arises at the confluence of the Río Chorobal (right) and Río Huamanzaña (left) 7 km southwest of the small town Chao in the Bosque de protección del Puquio Santa Rosa ("Puquio Santa Rosa forest reserve"). From there it flows in a south-westerly direction to the sea. The estuary is 63 km south-southeast of Trujillo .
