The Chao district is located in the Virú province in the La Libertad region in northwestern Peru . It has an area of ​​1736.87 km². The 2017 census counted 32,842 residents. 10 years earlier the population was 22,826. With the establishment of the Virú province on January 4, 1995, the newly established Chao district was separated from the existing Virú district . The administrative seat is the 68  m high city of Chao with 12,105 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Chao district is centrally located in the Virú province. It stretches from the Pacific coast over the arid coastal plain of Peru to the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The district has a 7 km long coastline and extends up to 56 km inland. The catchment area of the Río Chao with its headwaters Río Chorobal and Río Huamanzaña is mostly in the Chao district. The district extends in the southeast to the Río Santa . Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the vicinity of the city of Chao on the Río Chorobal and Río Huamanzaña. Otherwise there is desert vegetation. The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) from Chimbote to Trujillo crosses the district. In the southeast is the Calipuy National Reserve. In the north the district borders on the Virú district , in the northeast on the Huaso district (in the Julcán province ), in the east on the Santiago de Chuco district ( Santiago de Chuco province ), in the southeast on the Chimbote district ( Santa province ) and in the Southwest to the Guadalupito district .
