River course

The Río Mulaute has its source in the western foothills of the Cordillera Occidental , 35 km west of Quito . The headwaters are located at an altitude of about 1850  m in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas . The Río Mulaute initially flows mainly in a north-westerly direction through the hill country. At river kilometer 25, the Río Cocaniguas flows into the Río Mulaute on the right. This now turns to the west and henceforth forms the border to the province of Pichincha further north . At river kilometer 23 the trunk road E25 ( Santo Domingo de los Colorados - San Miguel de los Bancos ) crosses the river. At river kilometer 6, the river passes the settlement of Santa Rosa del Mulaute , before finally flowing into the Río Blanco 17 km north of Santo Domingo de los Colorados.

Catchment area

The Río Mulaute drains an area of estimated 520 km² on the western flank of the Cordillera Occidental and the coastal lowlands to the west. The catchment area borders on that of the Río Blanco to the north, that of the Río Saloya to the east and that of the Río Memé to the south .
