The Río Negro (Spanish for "black river") is a 43 km long right tributary of the Río Paute in the Morona Santiago province in southern Ecuador .
River course
The Río Negro rises on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Real near the provincial border with Azuay at an altitude of about 2800 m . The Río Negro flows mainly in an easterly direction through the mountains. At river kilometer 23.5 the Río El Cruzado , the most important tributary, flows into the Río Negro from the south. This finally flows 3 km southeast of the city of Santiago de Méndez into the Río Paute, 4 km above its junction with the Río Upano to the Río Santiago . The E45 road crosses the Río Paute immediately below the confluence of the Río Negro.
The catchment area of the Río Negro covers about 780 km².
Use of hydropower
San Bartolo hydroelectric power station
The San Bartolo hydropower plant ( ⊙ ) was completed in 2015. 16.6 km above the mouth of the Río Negro is a weir ( ⊙ ) on the river. A large part of the water is drained off at this point. The water is led to the power plant downstream via a 5.6 km long pipe with a subsequent surge tank and an approximately 760 m long pressure pipe. This has an installed capacity of 50 MW. The expansion water volume is 30 m³ / s. Below the power station, the water is returned to the river at river kilometers 9.5.
