Río San Pedro

The Río San Pedro is a river in southern Chile , in the province of Valdivia . It is navigable, known as a good fishing area and ideal for rafting .

Hydrology

It transports water from Riñihue Lake , the last of the Seven Lakes , the Río Calle Calle , who in Valdivia to Valdivia River and is in the Bahía de Corral in the Pacific opens. The mean discharge is 396.5 m³ / s with a maximum of 701 m³ / s in winter (June) and a low discharge of 140 m³ / s in summer (March).

history

On March 2, 1960, an earthquake measuring 9.5 on the Richter scale shook the region and the Rio San Pedro was blocked in three places by mudslides in its river. The tidal waves triggered caused the water level of Lake Riñihue to rise 15 meters above its normal height. Controlled flood relief has prevented major damage. Tsunamis up to 25 meters high occurred near the coast , the effects of which were felt in the entire Pacific region as far as Japan.

A similarly strong earthquake had already buried the river on September 16, 1575. When the traffic jam broke open after seven months, in April 1576 a gigantic tidal wave devastated the entire San Pedro valley with catastrophic effects on the neighboring settlements. Although Valdivia was evacuated in time, 1200 people died and the city was completely destroyed.

biology

The water is sometimes heavily polluted by the uncontrolled discharge of faeces and industrial waste water. Nevertheless, twelve endemic species can be found in the Rio San Pedro , for example freshwater crabs, rainbow fish, Chilean silverfish, catfish and countless insects, as well as introduced species such as rainbow trout, salmon and Argentinian carp.
