description

Reddish coal berries - Prague mushroom exhibition

The spherical fruiting body consists of brick-reddish stroma that sit freely on the substrate . They often grow in flocks. The fruit bodies are usually 0.4 to 1 centimeter wide, rarely they can be larger. The stroma is black inside. There are many perithecia just below the outer cortex , which makes it roughly bumpy. The mouths of the perithecia are fine, not protruding openings. The spores measure 11 to 15 x 5.5 to 7.5 microns and are bean-shaped, smooth, dark brown, and almost opaque. One side is flattened, the other has a longitudinal fissure. The spore powder is black. The asci measure 160 to 180 × 6 to 8 micrometers and are cylindrical-pedunculated.

Species delimitation

The very similar Hypoxylon rutilum also grows on beech branches. In this species, the spores are no longer than 10 µm and the perithecia mouths protrude clearly. The red-brown coal berry ( H. fuscum ) grows on dead branches of alder and hazel. Your stroma is somewhat smaller and more rounded and bumpy. The fruiting bodies of the multiform coal berry ( H. multiforme ) spread out rather crust-like on the substrate. They are only reddish in youth and later black in color. This species is often found on birch branches. The considerably larger cabbage ball mushroom ( Daldinia concentrica ) has a fruiting body that is criss-crossed with lighter, concentric zones on the inside. It is quite rare and grows on a variety of hardwoods.

ecology

The species grows saprobion table on dead, still barked branches of beech . It can be found all year round and is common.
