Rønsdam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rønsdam ( German : Rönsdam ; or also: Rönsdamm ) is a Danish place on the German-Danish border that belongs to the Bov Sogn , at which there is a border crossing named after the place .

history

The prefix Røn- goes to the plant name Danish. “Røn” back for whitebeams . It is also possible to interpret the word “røn” for stone or stone ground, which is widespread in the Jutland dialects (cf. old North. Hraun for stony ground). The suffix -dam (m) of the place name obviously refers to a pond or reservoir. The apparently old Germanic word corresponds to the Danish word dam - pond. The Krumme Weg , which connected the city of Flensburg in the north with the Ochsenweg (a main traffic route in the Middle Ages) near Bov, was laid out around the 12th century . In the middle of the 14th century, Niehuus Castle was built on Krummen Weg, 800 meters south of today's Rønsdam . Users of the route had to pay customs duties until the castle was destroyed in 1431. Today's route connection, from Castle Square to Rønsdam, is part of this historic route.

On a map of the greater Flensburg area from 1863, the small "Rønsdam" could already be found under the name "Rönsdamm". A detailed map of the area from 1904 showed Rønsdam as a small settlement made up of a few buildings. The north-western building was already more structurally developed at that time, but was not yet as extensive as it is today. At that time , Padborg to the south-east consisted of a relatively small settlement on the railway line to the north . At that time, Frøslev, west of Padborg, was just as developed as Bau . After the referendum in 1920 , "Rønsdam", which at that time was still dominated by agriculture, became a border town. Only decades after the Second World War , single-family houses were built on the western approach road to Rønsdam, Rønsdamvej . Most of the houses mentioned were built at the beginning of the road to the west, i.e. beyond the original Rønsdams. There, at the beginning of the path, is nowadays Rønshavevej, directly south, on which numerous single-family houses have also been built.

Rønsdam border crossing

The border crossing was established after the border was drawn in the early 1920s. Obviously, boundary stone number 32 was then set up at the border crossing . A barrier was initially dispensed with when the border crossing was set up. Only between 1935 and 1939 was one set. At the beginning of the Second World War, the border crossing was closed. Even after the end of the war, the Danish side closed it. The German and Danish border guards as well as the military paid attention to the border crossing, which, due to its remote location, hardly offered the possibility of an unauthorized crossing. In 1956 the border crossing was opened permanently to a restricted group of people, for example the local fire brigade.

As a result of the Schengen Agreement , the "Rønsdam border crossing" was officially opened to all pedestrians and cyclists in 2001. When the Danish wild boar fence was also drawn between Niehuus and Rønsdam at the end of 2019 , the "Rønsdam border crossing" received a pedestrian gate. The perceived delimiting and separating effect of the erected “ border fence ” met with local criticism.

various

  • The historic Krumme Weg was exposed again near Rønsdam in 1975. Its paving was probably made during the reign of Christian IV , between 1588 and 1648. In 2001, on the occasion of the opening of the border as part of the Schengen Agreement, an adjacent section of the Krumme Weg was restored true to the original on the German side.
  • The Gendarmstien hiking trail also runs through Rønsdam.
  • At the border crossing near Rönsdam, an "earth telephone connection" was set up which users can use to communicate. On both the Danish and the German side there is an "earth telephone" in the shape of a large funnel. The two earth telephones are connected by a pipe that runs under the border.
