The back mill is a listed watermill in Darmstadt-Arheilgen in Hesse , the history of which goes back to the early 14th century.

History and description

The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1318. In the Thirty Years War it was destroyed, rebuilt in 1672 and changed architecturally in later times. The building ensemble consists of a horseshoe-shaped complex with main and auxiliary buildings. In addition, the Mühlgraben and the mill entrance paved with blue basalt belong to the totality . Today's main building of the ensemble was built from clinker bricks around 1900 . The intact grinding process has been preserved.

Monument protection

The grain mill was originally called Krugsmühle and was later called Schornhauersmühle . After that the mill was called Riggenmühle , which became a back mill . The back mill is next to the Leibchesmühle on the Silz one of two still preserved mills in Darmstadt-Arheilgen of former eight. For architectural, industrial and urban history reasons, the building is a cultural monument .
