Athletic career

As a 17-year-old Rüdiger Bast appeared in the GDR-wide sports coverage. The TSG Wismar player was appointed to the squad of the GDR junior national team in 1966 and played four international junior matches as a striker in October and November 1966.

TSG Wismar used Bast for the first time in the 1966/67 season in their GDR league team , with which he played five league games and scored two goals. 1967/68 Bast was already a regular player, he was used in all 30 league games and increased his goal account by a further six hits. In the 1968/69 season Bast played all 15 league games of the first half of the season and scored four goals. In the second half of the season he was no longer used by the TSG league team.

In 1969 Rüdiger Bast moved to the GDR league club Lokomotive Stendal . In the 30 GDR league games in 1969/70, Bast was called up in 21 games and scored five goals. Six goals in 18 of 26 league games were enough for Lok Stendal's top scorer in 1970/71. After another weaker season in 1971/72 with only 13 league appearances in 22 rounds and only one goal, the following seasons brought the breakthrough to become a permanent regular in the Lok team. In the five seasons up to 1977 Bast played 105 of 110 league games and was Stendal's top scorer again in 1973, 1974 and 1976 with eleven, twelve and nine goals. After the 1976/77 season, Lok Stendal had to relegate from the GDR league. The team immediately managed to get promoted again, but Bast was no longer intended for the GDR league squad 1978/79.

In his eleven GDR league seasons Rüdiger Bast had made 207 league appearances and scored 63 goals. At Lok Stendal he was the top scorer four times.
