Rudiger Engerth

Rüdiger Engerth (born May 13, 1919 in Vienna ; † April 13, 2005 ibid) was an Austrian art historian, art critic and author.

Rüdiger Engerth visited the Theresianum in Vienna in the 1930s , where he dealt early with German-language literature. He passed his Matura there in 1937. Soon after the annexation of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, he joined the resistance group Austrian Freedom Movement , to which many of his classmates belonged. However, he was soon drafted into the Wehrmacht and had to take part in the attack on Poland in 1939. In 1940 many of his friends were arrested.

Rüdiger Engerth became known after the war for a biographical essay that he wrote in 1947 as an introduction to the collected poems of the Austrian resistance fighter , theologian and writer Hanns Georg Heintschel-Heinegg , who was executed in 1944 .

In the 1950s, Engerth became a central figure in “subcultural Vienna” and the “informal group” ( Rolf Schwendter , Subkulturelles Wien , Vienna 2003). He published numerous articles on current literature and music in various magazines, including regularly in the protocols , the Austrian magazine for literature and art. He was a member of the Graz Authors' Assembly .

As a cultural journalist, he regularly wrote cultural reviews for Austrian daily newspapers, including Neues Österreich , Salzburger Nachrichten , the Kurier and the Kronen Zeitung . He also worked as a cultural correspondent for foreign newspapers such as the Handelsblatt .

Rüdiger Engerth was buried at the Hietzingen cemetery .
