Rütjer Rühle

Winrich Rütjer Rühle (born April 14, 1939 in Leipzig ) is a German painter ; In 1991 he was awarded the City of Erlangen's Culture Prize.

biography

The Rütjer Rühles family came from Danzig . After fleeing Posen , Rühle grew up in Erlangen from 1945 onwards. From 1955 to 1963 he was a student of Christian Klaiber , who in turn had been a student of Henri Matisse and Fernand Léger . Rühle first began studying history, philosophy and art history at the University of Erlangen. At the same time he deepened his practical experience with painting through frequent visits to the restoration workshop of the Germanic Museum in Nuremberg. In 1959 and 1960 he painted various motifs based on originals by Konrad Witz , Rembrandt and Dürer . From 1963 to 1966 Rühle studied at the Berlin University of Fine Arts (today UDK ). After long periods of work in Andalusia , Paris and Cologne , he settled in Vincennes near Paris in 1975 . He is now a French citizen.

In the mid-1970s, Rühle developed a special painting technique for his mostly large-format canvases. To do this, he used large wooden panels and raw boards with which he pressed impasto paint onto the canvas. After removing the panels, imprints of the panel structure remained visible and traces of tearing off appeared, which, in addition to intense color values, give the paintings a strong surface texture.

1990 Rühle received the order of Erlangen for the work day and night, night and day I . Four canvases in the format 290 cm / 400 cm were created. The following year he was awarded the City of Erlangen's Culture Prize. Since then, Rühle has been concerned with the task of creating resonance spaces through the spatial arrangement of large-format pictures . This is how works such as Day and Night and Night and Day II (1995), Höft (1995 and 2002) and the Mühle Resonance Room (1997 to 2000), which was acquired by the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein , came about . Rühle has been working on the Amgheid project since 2003 , which has so far comprised nine canvases measuring 270 cm / 480 cm.

In addition to the large-format resonance rooms, between 1997 and 2002 Rühle also designed “books” in which he deals with Paul Celan's poetry collections . The books are painted, labeled and processed with different materials (mostly in the format 73 cm / 100 cm), which Rühle assembled into individual copies. The title match the poetry collections Celan: Lichtzwang , Zeitgehöft , the No Rose , stretto , Sprachgitter and Atemwende . Rühle is also interested in resonance with the books:
