Lists on the subject |
The R-60 is a Russian , formerly Soviet , air-to-air guided weapon with the NATO designation AA-8 "Aphid" .
description
Development of the K-60 began in the Molnija design office in the late 1960s . After a development time of only four years, series production began in 1973. In 1974 the first copies were delivered to the Soviet air force . Their range is 0.5 to 10 kilometers.
The unusually small and light infrared guided missile was developed for the self-protection of attack aircraft (e.g. MiG-27 , Su-24 , Su-25 ) and helicopters . It is only carried by fighter planes as supplementary armament.
The warhead of the R-60 contains an explosive filling made of an RDX - aluminum mixture, which is embedded in rods made of depleted uranium . If the conditions are favorable, the seeker head can capture its target from all directions ("all aspect").
The guided missile is usually mounted on an APU-60-1 launch rail and wired to be fired from there. If two guided missiles are to be mounted on a suspension station, the APU-60-2 launch rail suspension is used.
