Lists on the subject

The R-37 ( Russian Вымпел Р-37 ) is a long-range air-to-air missile made in Russia . The NATO code name is AA-13 Arrow .

development

The development of the R-37 began in 1983 at Wympel NPO under the designation K-37. The R-37 is based on the design of the R-33S . The first test launch took place in 1988. The missile was first observed from the west in 1992. In April 1994, during a test launch from a MiG-31BM, a target was hit at a record distance of 304 km. The R-37 was officially presented at the MAKS 1997 trade fair . In the same year, cooperation with Ukrainian companies was discontinued and the project then stood still for a long time. After the development by Russian companies was resumed, further tests were started in 2011. The final production version, R-37M, was only presented in 2016. It is unclear whether the Russian air force procured the R-37M afterwards.

technology

The R-37 was primarily designed to combat distant flying command posts and AWACS air surveillance aircraft. It is also intended for the fight against bombers and jammers and tankers . It can fight targets in an altitude range of 15 to 25,000 m. After the aircraft-based radar has determined the target data, it is passed on to the navigation system of the R-37 guided missile. Then the missile can be started. The guided weapon is fired on a semi-ballistic trajectory at the previously calculated collision point between the target and the guided weapon. The solid-fuel double-pulse motor accelerates the rocket to around Mach  6. After the first section of the solid-fuel rocket engine has burned out, it pauses and the further cruise flight takes place without power. During the cruise flight, the missile can be supplied with data from the aircraft radar via the data link . The control takes place in this flight phase with the inertial navigation system . The rocket engine is ignited again for the final approach, which gives the guided missile a high level of agility on the final approach. For the final approach, the laser impact and proximity fuze as well as the guided missile's own K u and X-band radar seeker head are activated. The range of this radar should be up to 50 km. The final approach is based on the principle of proportional navigation . If the target is hit directly, the warhead is detonated by the impact fuse. During a flyby, the warhead is ignited by the proximity fuse.
