RAS Macalister

Robert Alexander Stewart Macalister (born July 8, 1870 in Dublin , † April 26, 1950 in Cambridge ) was an Irish archaeologist .

Macalister was born in Dublin in 1870 to a Scottish family. His father Alexander Macalister was from 1883 professor of anatomy at the University of Cambridge .

He graduated from the University of Cambridge. From 1898 he carried out some excavations in the Middle East together with Frederick J. Bliss , including at Aseka . From 1900 to 1909 he was director of the Palestine Exploration Fund . Under his direction there were further excavations in Gezer . Among other things, the Gezer calendar was discovered here.

In 1909 Macalister became Professor of Celtic Archeology at University College Dublin , which he remained until his retirement in 1943. He carried out several excavations and field inspections. From 1924 to 1928 he served as President of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland and was then President of the Royal Irish Academy until 1931 . In this role he advocated the protection of archaeological sites. Many of his proposals were implemented through the National Monuments Act of 1930. When the National Monuments Advisory Council was formed as a result of the law , Macalister became its first chairman. He was also a member of the Northern Irish equivalent of this committee. After his retirement he moved to live with his sister in Cambridge. He died there in 1950.

During his academic career, Macalister was a very active writer and also worked on an interdisciplinary basis. In addition to several hundred papers and a variety of books on Irish archeology, European archeology, and Middle Eastern archeology, Macalister has also published on Irish epigraphy and the history and languages ​​of the Middle East.
