Ralph Tyrrell Rockafellar , called Terry, (born February 10, 1935 in Milwaukee ) is an American mathematician.

Education and career

Rockafellar received his bachelor's degree in mathematics summa cum laude from Harvard University in 1957 , received a Fulbright scholarship from the University of Bonn in 1957/58, and received his doctorate from Garrett Birkhoff at Harvard in 1963 ( convex functions and dual extremum problems ). From 1963 he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and from 1966 Associate Professor and from 1971 Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 2003 he retired and was adjunct professor at the University of Florida at Gainesville.

He was visiting scholar at the University of Copenhagen (1964), visiting professor at Princeton University (1965/66), the University of Colorado (1978), the University of Grenoble (1973/74), in Pisa (1991), Paris-Dauphine (1996 ), Pau (1997) and at the IIASA in Laxenburg near Vienna (1980/81). In 1992 he was John von Neumann Lecturer ,

He is very distantly related to the Rockefeller financial tycoon. Rockafellar has been married since 1964 and has three children.

research

He deals with optimization, variation methods and convex analysis with applications in stochastic programming, optimal control theory, economics, financial mathematics.

1973 to 1978 he was editor of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 1990 to 1995 of the SIAM Journal on Optimization and from 1993 he was co-editor of Convex Analysis.

Prizes and awards

Rockafellar also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Groningen (1984), the University of Montpellier (1995), the University of Chile (1998) and the University of Alicante (2000).
