Course of the road

The Route 40 is a highway in Jordan . The road is an east-west route from Route 65 in the Jordan Valley via Amman to Route 30 in the east of the country. The road is part of the transit route to Saudi Arabia and is 130 kilometers long.

Street description

The road begins on Route 65 in the Jordan Valley, some 320 meters below sea level and just a few kilometers from the border with Israel , although there is no border crossing. The road has 2 × 2 lanes from the starting point and climbs over hills to almost 900 m in the direction of Amman. Route 40 runs through the southern metropolitan area of Amman and intersects Route 25 and Route 35 there . Then the road continues southeast of the city and then crosses Route 15 . About 20 kilometers east of Amman, the road narrows to 1 × 2 lanes and then continues east through the desert, which is flat and rocky. There are hardly any places of importance to the east of Amman. It ends in the desert on Route 30 , which then continues to Saudi Arabia.

history

Route 40 is an important transit route for both directions from Amman to Baghdad with the connection of Route 30, 5 and 10 and to Riyadh with the connection of Route 30. The road is likely to have 2 × 2 lanes in western Amman in the 1980s been expanded. The former border strip with the Palestinian territories is a little further north than in the extension of Route 40.
