Route 62

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Route 62 (also Cape Route 62 ) is a highway in the provinces of Western Cape and Eastern Cape in South Africa . It leads from Cape Town via Paarl , Tulbagh , Worcester , Montagu , Calitzdorp , Oudtshoorn , Uniondale and Kareedouw to Port Elizabeth . It is around 850 kilometers long and is considered one of the most beautiful travel routes through South Africa. The name is reminiscent of the well-known Route 66 in the USA, which connects Chicago with Los Angeles and also runs through predominantly rural areas.

From Montagu on, the road officially bears the number R 62 (regional road no. 62). Before the N2 was built in 1958, the R62 was the main route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The coastal route ( Garden Route ) with the heavily frequented N2 is popular with tourists today, but only a few tourists use Route 62 through the rural Karoo .

course

Route 62 runs through the following wine-growing regions : Boberg (Tulbagh), Coastal Region (Paarl, Wellington), Breede Rivier Valley (Worcester, Robertson, Bonnievale) and Klein Karoo / Little Karoo (Montagu, Barrydale, Calitzdorp). This makes it one of the longest wine routes in the world.

The part of the route that begins in Montagu after passing Cogman's Pass is considered the most beautiful section of Route 62. Then you drive through the typical Karoo landscape to Barrydale and on to Ladismith. The next villages, Zoar and Amalienstein , are former mission stations . Calitzdorp is the center of southern wine production in South Africa, Oudtshoorn is the center of ostrich farming in South Africa.

From Oudtshoorn the road leads via De Rust , Uniondale and Joubertina to Port Elizabeth.
