The Royal Air Force Station Ternhill , or RAF Ternhill for short , is a small military airfield of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) south-west of Market Drayton in Shropshire , England .

The RAF uses the airfield as the training ground for the British Armed Forces Helicopter Flight School at RAF Shawbury . The barracks area built by the RAF and no longer used by them serves the British Army as a clive barracks .

history

The airfield near Ternhill was founded in 1916 during the First World War by the Royal Flying Corps , which stationed squadrons from October 1917. Squadrons lay here until the end of 1919 and the first phase of military use ended in 1922 when the terrain was sold and then used for agriculture.

In 1935, the site was nationalized again and an airfield, initially equipped with three hangars, was created. The first user was the 10th Flying Training School between early 1936 and late 1940 . A maintenance unit was added from 1937.

In the summer of 1939, the 78th Squadron , a Whitley bomber squadron, also used RAF Ternhill for the first time. After the outbreak of the Second World War , the station served as a base for a number of different squadrons between October 1939 and September 1941. These flew both the Hurricane and the Spitfire .

Between April 1942 and April 1946 Ternhill was used by the 5th (Pilot) Advanced Flying Unit . During this time there were always other units that used the base.

After the war, Ternhill remained a base for school associations. The 6th Flying Training School was here from April 1946 to July 1961 and from August of that year the Helicopter Wing of the Central Flying School , which stayed here until March 1976.

Since October 1963, Ternhill has been the base of the 632nd Volunteer Gliding School , now known as the relay.

After a short stay of 2 (Advanced) Flying Training School from March to October 1976, the airport served until March 1997 as an alternative place of the second Flying Training School , and since then the Defense Helicopter Flying School .

The barracks area, which had become vacant in October 1976 when the flight schools ended, was handed over to the Army at the end of the year, which initially referred to it as Borneo Barracks and later renamed it Clive Barracks . This stationed various regiments.

Todays use

The airfield is home to a glider or motor glider squadron, the 632nd Volunteer Gliding Squadron . It is also used in particular by the training helicopters stationed in Shawbury.

The Army accommodation area has been home to the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment since 2007 .
