As Class 120 denoting Spanish railway company Renfe a series of 28 umspurbaren high speed - railcars . The four-part trains run as the Alvia train type on connections that use both standard-gauge new lines and existing broad-gauge lines.

The vehicles were supplied by CAF and Alstom .

The maximum permitted speed is 250 km / h with a contact wire voltage of 25 kV and 220 km / h under 3 kV. Thanks to the CAF-BRAVA system, it is possible to change gauges between Iberian wide and regular gauges in around one minute. Eight of the sixteen axles are powered. The trains have 156 seats in second and 81 in first class.

history

In May 2001, RENFE ordered 20 multiple units for fast regional traffic. The trains, designed for speeds of 250 to 270 km / h, were to consist of four cars and offer space for 237 passengers. They should be delivered from 2003 and then be used in regional transport up to 250 km between Madrid , Guadalajara , Saragossa and Lleida and between Barcelona and Lleida. The contract, which also included maintenance for 14 years, was awarded to Alstom (a share of 270 million euros) and CAF for 440 million euros.

The trains went into service on May 17, 2006 and first ran on the new Madrid – Barcelona line . The travel time between Madrid and Barcelona was reduced to four hours and 15 minutes with a one-minute change of gauge in Puigverd de Lleida .

The use of the trains between Madrid and Barcelona ended with the opening of the continuous high-speed line in spring 2008. The trains have been used on the following routes since then:

  • Madrid – Valencia – Castellón
  • Madrid – Guadalajara – Irun
  • Madrid – Guadalajara – Logroño

Series 121

Renfe ordered a further 29 trains in 2004, which are run as the 121 series. The main differences to the 120 series are the elimination of the first class and the cafeteria, which increases the seating capacity from 237 to 281. The first series 121 trains went into service in January 2009.
