The ROX Desktop is a desktop environment for the X Window System around the file manager ROX-Filer. ROX is free software and is released under the GNU General Public License .
history
"ROX" is an acronym for " RISC OS on X Window System". RISC OS was developed by Acorn for their computers with ARM processors (Advanced RISC Machine). RISC stands for "Reduced Instruction Set Computer", a type of processor. The ROX desktop offers concepts of the RISC OS for Unix systems. The ROX Desktop has been developed since 1999, the main author is the Briton Thomas Leonard.
particularities
Everything is a file
The control of ROX follows the Unix principle of viewing everything as a file . Extensive use is made of drag and drop . Ordinary files, devices or even processes are represented as files and applications with all associated components as folders. Software can thus be installed and deleted using drag and drop; Installing two versions of a program at the same time is no problem either.
The ROX filer
The file manager ROX-Filer is the core of the ROX desktop. In addition to file management tasks, the filer also provides desktop icons and panels . Since the ROX desktop does not have a “start menu”, the filer is also the central contact point for starting the program.
The ROX-Filer does not use menu bars for control . Instead, context menus are consistently used to manage files. In addition, it offers a powerful search function, with queries such as
mtime after 2 days ago and size > 10Mb
can be set. (The example searches for files that have been changed in the last two days and that are larger than 10 megabytes).
The ROX-Filer can also be used independently of the ROX desktop under desktop environments such as KDE Plasma Workspaces or Gnome .
Memory requirements
The ROX desktop requires little memory and, like LXDE or Xfce, runs on low-performance computers on which the KDE Plasma Workspaces or Gnome can no longer be used productively.
Software for ROX
Like Gnome and Xfce, ROX is based on the GIMP toolkit as a GUI . OroboROX also has its own slim window manager especially for ROX. The core components of the ROX desktop also include the ROX session session manager, a text editor and an archive manager. There are also many small auxiliary programs especially for ROX. The " Zero Install " system is used to quickly set up programs .
distribution
Due to its modular structure, the ROX desktop is spreading quickly and is now part of the scope of Unix- like systems such as FreeBSD , NetBSD , OpenBSD or Debian , Fedora , Gentoo Linux , Mandriva Linux , Red Hat , Slackware , openSUSE and Ubuntu Linux . The Puppy Linux distribution uses the ROX filer as a file manager by default.
The ROX-Filer runs on the PowerPC , on Mac OS X and under Cygwin also on Windows systems.
