RS Puppis (or RS Pup for short ) is a Cepheid in the constellation Puppis or the aft deck of the ship .

Due to its location in an extensive nebula , scientists with ESO's New Technology Telescope in the La Silla Observatory have succeeded in determining its distance geometrically using the light echo in the nebula. The distance is 6500 ± 90 light years . It is one of the most accurate distance measurements of Cepheids, which is significant because Cepheids are used to determine the distance of objects close to them. More recent parallax measurements of the Gaia satellite , however, indicate a distance of less than 6000 LJ.
