RUAG Ammotec is a division of the Swiss technology group RUAG and is now a leading manufacturer of small-caliber ammunition for civil and military purposes and other pyrotechnic specialties. Production sites are in Switzerland ( Thun and Altdorf ), Germany ( Fürth and Sulzbach-Rosenberg ), Sweden ( Åmotfors ), Hungary (Sirok) and the USA ( Tampa ). It arose from the merger of the relevant areas of RUAG and Dynamit Nobel and the acquisition of further ammunition manufacturers and regional trading companies in the field of hunting and shooting sports.

history

Until 2002

Switzerland

The Steffisburg powder mill, founded in 1586, belonged to changing owners, but was always under state control of the Canton of Bern . With the Federal Constitution of 1848 the powder monopoly of the federal state came into being and thus ownership of the powder mill changed to the Swiss Confederation . After an accident, the Federal Council decided in 1862 not to rebuild the mill. Instead, in 1863, Colonel Hans Herzog founded the "Eidgenössische Laboratorium" (Federal Ammunition Factory Thun, (MF + T) from 1874 ) , just a few hundred meters away . In the same year, the Federal Construction Workshop was established in Thun as a manufacturer of modern artillery, and in 1871 the Federal Weapons Factory in Bern. This took place in the course of the standardization of weapons and ammunition of the federal troops as well as the streamlining and modernization of the production of artillery and infantry ammunition. The many small powder mills throughout Switzerland, which came before the federal powder shelf in 1848, have for the most part been closed. From 1896 another production facility followed, the then independently run ammunition factory Altdorf (MF + A) . In 1995, the two ammunition factories were merged to form the SM Schweizerische Munitionsfabrik and in 1998, together with the other dependent public-law federal companies in the arms sector, this was transferred by federal law to RUAG (with the division designation RUAG Munition), a private stock corporation.

German line

The German Rheinisch-Westfälische Sprengstoff AG (RWS) was founded in 1886 and later expanded to Nuremberg and Fürth . In 1889 RWS took over the ammunition factory from Mr. H. Utendoerffer in Nuremberg and in the following years built an ammunition factory in Stadeln / Fürth. The dynamite AG , formerly Alfred Nobel & Co merged in 1931 u. a. with RWS to form the new Dynamit AG with headquarters in Troisdorf. In the early 1960s, the company, now trading under the name Dynamit Nobel AG , took over Gustav Genschow & Co , which was founded in 1912 . AG (GECO) from Karlsruhe and in 1990 the Swedish Norma , which had been producing since the beginning of the century.

2002 - today

In 2002, RUAG took over the small-caliber ammunition production division from the German Dynamit Nobel AG, thus adding to its own production portfolio. The new business unit was named RUAG Ammotec. In the following year RUAG Ammotec took over the distribution and trademark rights for civil ammunition from the Austrian company Hirtenberger AG and five years later MFS 2000 in Syrok, in northern Hungary. Since 2009, RUAG Ammotec has also been manufacturing in Tampa (USA) and thus now in five countries.

The other areas of RUAG Munition, i.e. the production of large-caliber ammunition (artillery and mortars) as well as shaped charges, were initially managed separately under the old name RUAG Munition and then sold to Saab Bofors Dynamics for lack of market opportunities . The metal processing, metal component production and recycling business in Altdorf were separated and merged into RUAG Components (later RUAG Technology).

Products

Army and authorities

In addition to the German Armed Forces, the Swiss Army and the armed forces of various NATO members, RUAG Ammotec's customers also include, for example, police authorities in various countries. In addition to the production of ammunition up to a caliber of 12.7 mm, defensive, offensive and training hand grenades are also produced. Other products are the Swiss GP 11 and 5.6 mm Gw Pat 90 cartridges (serial ammunition in NATO caliber 5.56 mm, adapted to the Swiss assault rifle 90) and the "Swiss P" sniper line.

Hunting and sport

With the brands RWS , Rottweil, GECO and Norma , all areas of application for shot, rifle, rim and center fire cartridges are covered.

Industrial products

The company manufactures a wide range of products that are incorporated into the products of other manufacturers. In addition to components for small-caliber ammunition, these are essentially ignition elements for medium and large-caliber ammunition and primers as well as pyrotechnic mixtures, which are mainly used in automotive applications. In addition, cartridge ammunition is developed and manufactured for use in system applications, e.g. B. for nail guns in fastening technology or bolt guns in the slaughterhouse industry.
