Rabindra Nath Mohapatra (born September 1, 1944 in Musagadia , Mayurbhanj ) is an Indian theoretical physicist .

Life

Mohapatra was born in 1944 in the village of Musagadia in what was then the princely state of Mayurbhanj . He studied at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar ( Bachelor's degree in 1964) and the University of Delhi ( Master's degree in 1966). In 1969 he received his PhD with Robert Marshak at the University of Rochester . He then worked as a post-doc at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and at the University of Maryland . In 1974 he became Assistant Professor and 1976 Associate Professor at City College of the City University of New York (CUNY) with Bunji Sakita . In 1980/1 he was visiting professor at the Max Planck Institute for Physics . Since 1983 he has been a professor at the University of Maryland. He was a visiting scientist at CERN (1976, 1981, 1985), SLAC , Los Alamos National Laboratory and Brookhaven National Laboratory . From 2005 to 2007 he was visiting professor at the Technical University of Munich .

Mohapatra dealt with GUTs , unified theories of elementary particles, and neutrino physics. In particular, he and G. Senjanovic investigated left-right symmetric unified theories (which then spontaneously broke to the observed theories of electroweak interaction with parity violation ) with prediction of a neutrino mass in the 1970s .

In 1980 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 1980/81 he was also an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and in 2005 he received the Humboldt Research Award . He is an honorary doctorate from North Orissa University in India (2009). Since 1987 he has been a member of the Indian Academy of Sciences .
