Rachel Kranton

Rachel E. Kranton (* 1962 ) is an American economist and university professor .

Career, research and teaching

Kranton first studied at the University of Pennsylvania , where she graduated in Economics and Middle East Studies in 1984 . She then moved to the Woodrow Wilson School of Princeton University for a master's degree , and in 1993 she completed her Ph.D. - Graduated from the University of California, Berkeley . First as a lecturer and from 1994 as an assistant professor , she was part of the academic staff at the University of Maryland . In 2001 she was promoted to associate professor , in 2004 she was appointed full professor at the university. In 2007 she followed a call from Duke University , where she became dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2018 .

Kranton examines how institutions and the social environment influence economic activity. In doing so, she deals in particular with social networks and has shaped the research field of network economics since the 1990s . In collaboration with George A. Akerlof , she conducts research in the field of tension between economy and social identity .

Kranton has been a Fellow of the Econometric Society since 2012 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2020 . Between 2001 and 2007 she served on the editorial board of the American Economic Review , after which she was co-editor of the Journal of Economic Perspectives until 2010 .
