Radio Birdman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radio Birdman is one of the first Australian punk bands. Deniz Tek and Rob Younger formed the group in 1974 and first recorded the 1976 release of Burn My Eye .

Career

Their first LP, Radios Appear , was completely ignored by commercial radio, but had found an advocate in the Sydney broadcaster 2JJ (Double Jay) and had enough success in Australia to land a contract with Sire Records (US label and home of the Ramones ) pull, who published a modified version of Radios Appear internationally. It took three years to record a sequel, Living Eyes . By this point the Australian punk scene had changed and the band broke up in 1978 before the LP was released.

All members continued to play in other bands. Rob Youngers New Christs went more towards hardcore punk . The Visitors , the band of Tek and keyboardist Pip Hoyle, as well as The Hitmen of rhythm guitarist Chris Masuak and bassist Gilbert Warwick continued to play the Radio Birdman sound. The remaining members came back together in 2003 for a reunion tour. In Germany they played in Bielefeld and Solingen . In 2007 the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame .

Both the early work of INXS and Midnight Oil were heavily influenced by Radio Birdman's style of music, which in turn had strong influences from MC5 and The Stooges , with whose members some of the Radio Birdman musicians also founded the all-star project New Race in 1981 . Her most important legacy, however, was arguably its overwhelming influence on Australian indie rock in the 1980s .
