Radio LoRa is an alternative local radio station from Zurich . The transmission frequency is 97.5 MHz. In addition, Radio LoRa is broadcast on the DIGRIS regional multiplex in northern Switzerland on channel 9D according to the digital DAB standard.

Radio LoRa has its origins in the Zurich Opera House riots in 1981. Initially, the radio broadcast without a license. In 1982 the community of interests was able to legalize its radio and thus claim a legal broadcast frequency for itself. Since then, a collective of around 300 broadcasters has taken care of the design of Radio LoRa's radio program. LoRa is a member of the Union of Non-Commercial Local Radios (UNIKOM) .

structure

As a grassroots democratic project, LoRa provides for various, interlinked, committees and working groups (AG newspaper, AG music), which mostly work well, but sometimes also a little less well - depending on their composition.

The foundation is the owner of the license , i.e. the broadcasting license and the studios including the devices. It thus provides the infrastructure for a radio station. All those who listen to Radio LoRa with an annual contribution, as well as all those who actively help shape the program as broadcasters, are members of the Radio LoRa - Alternative Local Radio Zurich association (until 2002 there were two separate associations, ALR-Finanz and ALR- Product). As the greatest decision-making power, the General Assembly (VV) meets twice a year, and more often if necessary. There is the place to elect people to the two important bodies of the Broadcasting Commission (SK) and the Board of Directors. The broadcasting committee is responsible for the design of the program structure and handles new applications or punishes violations of the broadcasting statutes. The board of directors takes on all questions relating to personnel and finances.

The paid positions are currently distributed among seven people who together form the operating group (BG) and do the operating work with different workloads. The foundation and the association's board of directors work out the operating budget together in the finance committee, where they are represented equally . Within the LoRa structure, the "half of the ether" as an amalgamation of all women and lesbian programs has an important position. The Spanish-speaking broadcasters also enjoy autonomy with their Tuesday editorial office Martes Latino . Other broadcasters such as Info LoRa, on the other hand, are more loosely organized. The AG Music takes care of the maintenance and expansion of the music archive.

history

For the first time, Alternative Lokal-Radio Zürich (ALR) made a name for itself in 1977, albeit initially only as an organization fighting to obtain a broadcasting license in a radio landscape that lives solely from the public broadcaster SRG SSR idée suisse . In the same year, however, a license request was answered negatively.

Under the name “LoRa”, a group of activists broadcast from September 19th for a week from the Autonomous Youth Center (AJZ) on Limmatstrasse - of course without official permission. The programs are fought by the PTT with massive use of jammers. The name “LoRa” was only adopted later, in 1983, by the legal alternative local radio ALR.

In September 1982, the ALR people submitted a second request for a license to the department of Federal Councilor Leon Schlumpf . The chances have now improved.

In the summer of 1983 the ALR received a broadcasting license together with a number of - mostly commercial - local radio stations. From November 14th, the time has finally come: the ALR radio will start broadcasting regularly under the name “Radio LoRa”. The studios are on Mainaustrasse in Seefeld .

An arson attack that has not yet been resolved in 1986 destroyed practically the entire studio space. It takes a few months before regular broadcasting can be resumed.

In the fall of 1989 the era begins on the military road in District Four . From January 1, 1990, Radio Lora broadcasts non-stop 24 hours a day from the Üetliberg transmission tower .

In 1993, an acute financial crisis led to the entire operating group being dismissed. Hundreds of people decide to keep broadcasting operations from their own financial means for the time being.

In the 1990s, radio LoRa offered different transmission facilities for local Techno - DJs and therefore received considerable attention in the then still largely acting in the underground movement Zurich Technopark.

1997 is the year of the major program reform: the program is brought into a clearer form by means of fixed broadcasting times and broadcasting vessels. In addition, the frequency changes: from 104.5 to 97.5 MHz.

From 2000 there is a membership card for all members. Radio LoRa is also taking important technological steps into the future and setting up a new computer network and a digital audio editing suite. With the network and the associated “On Air Tool” software, all repeat programs and jingles can now be broadcast easily and simply directly from the computer over the air.

In 2001 LoRa grew up and interfered with Swiss legislation together with the other free radios. In a multilingual petition, the Union of Non-Commercial Local Radios UNIKOM calls for the recognition of a special status for local community radio in the future Radio and Television Act RTVG. The petition was sent to the Federal Chancellery and has been signed by over 3000 radio professionals from over 50 different countries.

During the summer break of 2002, a four-week computer-generated radio play called “Folksong Machine” caused a sensation. Concerned cable operators, audio control and handset call to know if there is a malfunction. Start of «Radio Grünau»: In cooperation with the unemployment and integration project «Vert.Igo» in Zurich's Grünau district, «klipp &klang radiokurse» organizes radio workshops for children, young people and adults, mostly of foreign origin. An improvised radio studio in the Grünau quarter is to broadcast live on the Internet on the radio LoRa frequency.

On November 14, 2008, the radio celebrated its twenty-five year anniversary.

Editorial offices

  • Culture: Nutritional Value Culture (NWK) deals with topics related to society, art and culture, the broadcasting times are Thursday and Friday from 7pm to 8pm.

The editorial team at Nutritional Culture is not a fixed group, but a fluctuating, democratically functioning team. With various focus topics, interviews, studio guests and background information, Nutritional Value Culture addresses listeners who are also open to less easily digestible things such as longer verbal contributions.

In order to concentrate the broad spectrum of broadcasts over the year, two special vessels were created: the Long Night and the Theme Month. The Long Night is broadcast in June and lasts around 6 hours each. It is given an umbrella topic, to which all participating editorial members work on a contribution. The individual contributions - pre-produced or with live guests - are assembled into an exciting whole. The theme month is always November. It also receives an umbrella topic on which each participating member of the editorial team makes a contribution. The topic month starts with a jointly directed discussion program on the topic. Otherwise work is done autonomously.

Subgroups such as Maelstrom , the monthly debate broadcast , also operate within Nutritional Culture .
